Chapter 9 - Vespasian.

As winter started to set in word came to us that Vespasian had landed in Rome, and after sorting medical assistance for his wife, he would travel up to see us all.

Several weeks had gone by, then one day he rode into the estate with a full company of cavalry soldiers as escorts. He came regaled in his officer’s uniform, he also had a large red cape wrapped about his frame, keeping out the chill of the winter air.

He was an impressive sight as he slid of his horse in front of his waiting parents and Titus, who hid behind his grandmother. Brutus took Vespasian’s horse away to the stables. Vespasian then approached his parents whereby he greeted his father and then kissed his mother. He then looked down to Titus and ruffled the boy’s hair.

‘My beloved son, it is with glad eyes that I behold you again but I admit I should have spent more time with you, I was unable to do so, due to my duties for the empire aboard.’

As Vespasian looked around, he noticed Maecenas and went over to greet him, looking to one side to where I was standing, peering down at me, he enquired,

‘Octavian, I presume?’ I nodded.

‘It's alright to talk to me now boy, I am your adopted father am I not?’

‘Only because you were ordered to be,’ I replied, ‘don't forget I was there at the time.’

He stood back and looking at Maecenas said.

‘Well, I did not expect that. His Latin has improved so much I almost forgot he was Iceni! The boys honest, also got spirit and he is not afraid to stand his ground, this one will do well in life. I like him!’

‘Sir,’ Maecenas said, ‘I have grown to love Octavian for all these things as you say, but also his friendship, loyalty, and good nature. One cannot but like him, everyone who has crossed his path has become his friend, including our emperor's own nephew Nero, who now considers him his blood brother.’

Vespasian looked back down at me.

‘Well, there's more to you than meets the eye, I can see we need to spend time together and get to know each other, don't you agree?’

‘Yes sir, I would look forward to that.’

‘Fair enough boy let’s not dally and we shall start today!’

With that he turned and walked into the villa with his parents and Titus. Maecenas turned to me saying,

‘That's what I like about you, don't hold back and say what you think!’ I nodded,

‘Was I wrong, I was only telling it as it was, I thought it was called being honest!’ He laughed!

‘Yes, your right but sometimes it's better to keep your thoughts to yourself, as you could offend and upset the other person.’ To which I replied,

‘There is still a lot to learn!’

‘True, but always be honest to yourself and your friends, as a lie can always come back and bite you in the arse.’ We both smiled at each other, and I realised Maecenas always knew best.
